JUST BEFORE DAWN
Media Blasters half-hearted DVD release of Just
Before Dawn met with much criticism when it was released recently
– an incomplete print, a bad re-master and lackluster cover
art sent fans into a tailspin – but newbies to good old 80s
slashers will still savor at the chance to see Jeff Lieberman’s
superior horror movie.... read

THE MANSON FAMILY
Viewed
as a factual historical account of the precise inner workings, conversations,
and murderous activities of the notorius Manson family, Jim Van
Bebber's film is questionable at best. However, viewed as an exploitation
film of gore, shock, full frontal, and really dirty hippies, it
delivers...read

PRISON A-GO-GO
Prison
A-Go-Go is far from a flawless film. Actually, it may be
rather insulting to many subsets of the population, including men,
women, and zombies. But is it entertaining? Hell, yeah...read

SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST
I
just love a girl in uniform.
Norifumi Suzuki's
School of the Holy Beast tells the story of inquisitive
young Yumi Takigawa who is in pursuit of the details of her mother's
fate within the Sacred Heart Convent. She takes a religious vow
and manages to gain access to the convent by becoming one of the
young nuns in attendance. There, she is witness to all sorts of
heinous oddness and masochistic (some outright torturous) behavior
as she slowly unravels the mysteries and secrets hidden by the private
order... read

AENIGMA
It’s not unusual for a prolific filmmaker
to have his share of successes and failures and Italian splatter
master Lucio Fulci is no different. But his status remains unwavering,
even after his death in 1996. Aenigma came towards the end of his
most successful phase, one he enjoyed for well over a decade,...read

THE BACKLOT MURDERS
Attempting to ride on the coattails of Scream,
this late 90s entry into the slasher genre doesn’t really
add anything new to the burgeoning renaissance, and quite frankly,
it doesn’t look like they were trying...read

BLIND TARGET
Jess Franco has made over 180 films, so love him
or hate him, it’s hard not to admire the pure tenacity and
passion he possesses for filmmaking. He’s proved himself more
than once, mostly during the heyday of his career of the 70s and
80s, but Blind Target unfortunately falls into that category of
Franco films that only pure enthusiasts will want to see... read

BATTLE ROYALE
In Japan a law is passed in order to deal with
the overcrowding of schools and the teenage delinquency problem.
The Battle Royale act allows one class every year to be chosen at
random to be sent to a deserted island where they are fitted with
explosive collars and find out that they have three days to kill
each other off with whatever weapons they are given at random...

THE CAT O' NINE TAILS
I love almost all of Dario Argento's films (and
plan to review some of them in the coming months), but for some
reason I couldn't get into this one. Sure, there are some neat killing
scenes, but there is SOOOOOOO much talk in this one that I had a
hard time just trying to stay awake. "Is there a killer out
there?" "Yes there is a killer out there." "Are
you the... read full review. |
DRILLER KILLER
For it’s time, Driller Killer may have been
shocking, controversial, and a cult hit, but seeing it now, I couldn’t
say it’s anything special. Of course, this is only my opinion,
but I was greatly disappointed in every aspect of this boring film.
Director Ferrara stars as an aspiring artist on the brink of insanity
whose future depends on the success of his latest painting. He believes
it is the one that will make him rich, and he pours his entire soul
into completing it. However, things don’t go as planned, and
all last-standing signs of sanity vanquish as he starts .... read

ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS
This is closer to the movie that her original "Elvira:
Mistress Of The Dark" should have been. A true modern "burlesque"
film, this film is filled with purposely corny jokes, cheesy sets,
purposely bad acting, and lots and lots and lots of boob jokes and
cleavage flashing. In a good move, this film in set in the 1800s
with Elvira as a traveling cabaret performer hitching rides in the
countryside with her hefty servant... read

THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION
I should first warn you that this movie has been
MST3Ked,
which obviously means that it sucks loads of dick. Released in the
mid 1970s (admittedly a little past the prime of the giant bug subgenre),
The Giant Spider Invasion features gloriously craptastic
special effects, copious fiddle music, and Alan Hale Jr., who you
may recognize as The Skipper from Gilligan's Island......

NEKROMANTIK
Apparently the only things held sacred to director
Jorg Buttgereit are sex, love, and sorrow. Everything from cute
little kittens, fluffy innocent rabbits, and urinating humans to
the rotting corpses of somebody’s late loved ones are exploited
to the fullest in his masterwork, Nekromantik... read

NEKROMANTIK 2
What can one say about Jorg Buttgereit’s
Nekromantik 2, other than it was another sequel that didn’t
need to be made… The story is basically about Monika’s
(played by Monika M.) internal struggle between her necrophiliac
tendencies and the possibility of living love. The film begins with
the recap of the ending to Nekromantik, Rob’s suicide, intercut
with shots of Monika digging up Rob’s grave and taking him
home. After some mediocre sensual scenes with the body, she happens...

PANDORA PEAKS
It came from out of nowhere...well, we knew it
was out there, but never really expected it to be released. (And
believe it or not I myself was being considered to design the poster
for a possible theatrical release of the film in question.) Well,
here it is; "Pandora Peaks"... perhaps Russ Meyer's final
pre-mortem opus. And it's either total trash or great genius...or...
perhaps a sly combination of both... read

PRIMITIVE LOVE
How the hell do you review a DVD with two movies
on it and keep it short? And more importantly, how the hell do you
review a Something Weird Video? Well, there is one thing that is
for certain and that is anything released by Something Weird Video
is best viewed in a large group...and stinking drunk. But I unfortunately
opted for viewing this DVD both alone and sober. Make sure you keep
that in mind while reading this review... read

SCHRAMM
Bible-thumpers getting their heads smashed in,
date rape, paint, a sexy whore in bondage, sex with a cheap inflatable
torso, plenty of full frontal male nudity, cock torture with nails,
a decrepit apartment building with ugly wall paper, plenty of blood,
creepy hallucinations, and a seemingly all around quiet, nice guy
are what Jorg Buttgereit& 8217;s Schramm is all about. Did I
give too much away? Hell no. You’ve got to see this film.
Schramm follows the fleeting, disjointed memories of the previous

TRUTH OR DARE
Although Truth or Dare is an entertaining movie,
the most compelling story is found in the featurette, which showcases
how this movie, made renegade style, was lensed by a then 18-year-old
Tim Ritter. A true labor of love, this low-budget potboiler makes
the most of what is available to the ever-resourceful Ritter...
